In the world of tech media, Cali and I live far away from the action. We live in Dallas and we don’t get many opportunities to break stories, although we’re learning how. Breaking stories on video is not a very efficient way to get news out.
Techmeme is our absolute favorite technology Web site. Gabe Rivera built it to agregate tech stories that matter so they rise to the top. It’s the one site I wouldn’t want to live without.
It was a major goal for us to get on Techmeme and we did it with our story about Woopra (thanks to some link love from Mike Arrington). It isn’t our goal every day though. We mostly want to put out a tech show that makes people smile and we only want to be on Techmeme when we think a story merits it.
Last night, we released a Brief about Zac White’s OpenClip project that brings copy and paste to the iPhone. The story is important (at least to iPhone owners and tech news junkies like us). Cali worked hard to get the news out first so when we hit Publish, our emotions were all over the place. There’s no way to describe what being first to a story is like.
The story didn’t immediately hit Techmeme. I don’t know how long it should take, but it took longer than I thought it should. I tweeted that the “Techmeme algorithm is sexist.” It was a joke…a bad joke. Later when the story made Techmeme, I tweeted that “I take it back. The Techmeme algorithm isn’t sexist.”
I want to publically apologize to Gabe. Gabe, you’ve built what I think is the most valuble resources for tech news junkies on the Web and I’m sorry for what I tweeted about your algorithm.

You guys are class acts, Neal. I’m sure that Gabe knows you meant know harm, but the true act of class is doing the right thing even when you don’t have to.
Bradley said it well. We’ve all said things we regret, and Twitter makes moments like that a near-certainty. Neal, you’re one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and the evidence of that is that in the wake of one biggest nights in the history of the Brief, your main thought is to apologize for a tweet made in the rush of the moment. A class act, indeed.
Techmeme isn’t sexist — but iPhones just might be…?
Never heard of techmeme (but woopra is wonderful) and when I tried to look at the site it’s down (11:02 CST) not good for a tech news site.
1-800-flowers should do the trick.
Dude! Well done. I agree that it was probably no big deal but it shows good character on your part.
WORD!
